Hundreds of thousands of people flood into London’s Chinatown for New Year events. Activities kick off on varies town squares with dramatic acrobatics and live musical performances. Strings of lanterns decorate the crowded streets of Chinatown, where cabbages stuffed with red envelopes hang in front of shop doorways. Lion dancers catch the cabbage with the lion’s mouth to bring prosperity to the shops for the coming year.

In the United States, San Francisco hosts the oldest and biggest Chinese New Year festival in North America. At the center of all the excitement is the parade, which includes many colorful floats and marching bands. Featured at the parade’s end is the two-hundred-foot-long Golden Dragon. Decorated with lights from nose to tail, it winds its way down the street with the support of more than a hundred people. Thousands of firecrackers are set off to announce its arrival.
