What do you want to discuss?
Over the past several months, I’ve been thinking about how I can better contribute to the English learning of our fans on this page. We currently have close to 50,000 followers, and it is my social responsibility to make full use of my voice as a positive force.
It was immensely difficult figuring out how I could better serve you. There are already numerous pages focusing on life-skills English, test prep, tidbits of knowledge, and even SLA theories and teaching methodologies.
Since 2012, I have shared mostly English learning articles, educational resources, and current events. I have taught many of our followers in person and have watched you grow from high school and college students to mothers, fathers, and successful professionals in every domain imaginable.
Over this period of seven years (yes, it’s been that long), I have come to better understand my own strengths and role as a teacher. I had the opportunity to return to school at the age of 38 and view English learning from diverse perspectives. Through these lenses, I feel that while the English learners on this page are knowledgeable, we, as second language learners, tend to focus on the mechanics of the language rather than its pragmatic uses. While language mechanics are undoubtedly crucial to learners, English is not only a tool for testing and basic communication. It is a vehicle for higher-level thinking, self-empowerment, collaboration, and change.
Thus, I aim to provide you with live discussions of current events in English and explore, analyze, evaluate, and discuss-not debate-key issues. We will examine topics from diverse domains, but rather than just acquiring knowledge, we will use the language to think in different perspectives and facilitate change both within ourselves and others.
We will step out of our comfort zones and echo chambers and focus on pertinent world issues, turning them into valuable lessons rather than fleeting TV captions. Together, I aim to transform our page into a medium that facilitates the pragmatic and sociocultural uses of English, helping you to apply and use what you learn to connect with the world and succeed.
Let’s continue learning English here, not only as a language but a tool for change and mutual success.
We’ll start our live stream on FB next Tuesday night at 8:30 PM.
