VT30: Space, the final frontier. 宇宙,最後的邊疆。

Vocabulary Challenge 30: https://tw.voicetube.com/everyday/20190918

Announcement: This is our final speaking challenge on VoiceTube. While we will continue to have speaking challenges, they will only be posted on our blog: http://bit.ly/2WtAqop

Script:

Do you guys like science fiction?

Have you ever watched a show called Star Trek the Next Generation?

同學有沒有看過一部名為《星際爭霸戰: 銀河飛龍》的科幻電視影集?

The show always began with a short introductory speech about space exploration. It’s called “Where no one has gone before" 「勇踏前人未至之境」:

Do you want to hear it? No, don’t worry, I’ll still read it.

So the introductory speech is:

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!

宇宙,最後的邊疆。這是星艦企業號的旅程。它繼續的任務,是去探索這未知的新世界,找尋新的生命和新文明,勇踏前人未至之境。

OK, you probably know what we are going to talk about today after that speech. Yup, space exploration, specifically, the moons of Jupiter!

Let’s move on to our sentence of the day.

Europa’s neighbor, Ganymede (ɡanɪmiːd), is also believed to have an ocean hidden under its thick icy shell.

歐羅巴的鄰居,蓋尼米德,也被認定在其深厚的冰表層下,藏著一片汪洋。

So let’s say this sentence again.

Europa’s neighbor, Ganymede (ɡanɪmiːd), is also believed to have an ocean hidden under its thick icy shell.

Faster

Europa’s neighbor, Ganymede (ɡanɪmiːd), is also believed to have an ocean hidden under its thick icy shell.

OK, you know this game. What are the possible thought groups? 「字組」

Europa’s neighbor,
Ganymede,
is also believed to have an ocean hidden
under its thick icy shell.

So I broke it to four chunks this time. It might be strange why we pause right after “Europa’s neighbor,”but here, we’re giving more information on the noun phrase “Europa’s neighbor.”We’ll talk more about this later.

How about intonation? 語調

Europa’s neighbor (rise),
Ganymede (rise),
is also believed to have an ocean hidden under its thick icy shell (fall).

What about the sentence stress? 句子的重音 You could say:

Europa’s neighbor,

Ganymede,

is also believed to have an ocean hidden

under its thick icy shell.

So, more stress is placed on hidden and thick because these are new pieces of information. Europa and Ganymede are also stressed because they are proper nouns (專有名詞) and might be difficult for most listeners to understand without context.

OK, it’s grammar time!!! 大家最愛的文法時間到了!!!

Today’s sentence pattern is

Europa’s neighbor, Ganymede, is also believed to have an ocean hidden under its thick icy shell.

First, I want to talk about apposition 同位語.

In grammar, apposition is a situation in which two nouns or noun phrases are used to refer to the same person or thing:
In the expression “my brother Joe", “my brother" and “Joe" are in apposition.

同位語是指在一個「名詞或名詞相等語」之後緊跟著另一個的「名詞或名詞相等語」,而後一個「名詞或名詞相等語」是用來說明(不需要逗號)或補充(需要逗號隔開)前一個「名詞或名詞相等語」。這樣的關係即稱為「同位」。

My best friend, Lee, came to visit me last night.

我最好的朋友,李,昨晚來看望我。

Lee 是 My best friend 的同位語。

Jade Mountain, the highest mountain in Taiwan, is 3,952 meters above sea level.

玉山,台灣最高山峰,海拔高度是在海平面上3,952公尺。

the highest mountain in Taiwan 是 Jade Mountain 的同位語。

If you use apposition in speech, be sure to pause between the two noun and noun phrases or listeners will have a hard time understanding.

OK, let’s take a break.

So do you like science fiction? Have you ever wanted to explore space?

I think one of my favorite science fiction movies is the Martian.

Here’s a description of the film from Wikipedia:

The Martian is a 2015 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. The film depicts an astronaut’s lone struggle to survive on Mars after being left behind, and efforts to rescue him, and bring him home to Earth.

《絕地救援》是一部2015年美國科幻片這部電影描繪了一名太空人在被遺忘後在火星上努力的獨自生存,並美國太空總署如何努力救他,並將他帶回地球。

I think I enjoyed the movie quite a bit because I have always been fascinated by exploring other planets and surviving in a desolate location. It’s fun watching Matt Damon try to survive in space with limited resources, especially when he adapted his tools and equipment to produce food and water. I’m not going to spoil the movie for you, so I’ll stop there.

Anyhow, I think people are always looking to explore the unknown because it is a part of human nature to do so. Our ancestors built ships to sail to new areas not only to seek a better life, but also to explore the unknown and adapt. I think this desire to explore is why humans have been so successful as a species.

OK, let’s go back to vocabulary learning and go over some new words.
